Have you wondered how Lynn creates her stunning wool art canvases?

The process itself is actually really simple - the challenge comes from the fact that it is a very time consuming and intricate process. A typical canvas can take 25 to 35 hours to complete, but some can take much longer, depending on how complex the image is. Here is how she does it!

Step one

After deciding on an image, Lynn will sketch it out in pencil on the canvas. The example here is of Newlands Church, near Keswick in the Lake District.

Step two

Wool is now applied. This is done by gluing strands in place using PVA glue. The thickness and texture of the wool used varies depending on the picture being created. In this example, for the roof of the church, Lynn has skilfully chosen a wool to give a ‘mottled’ look to mimic the actual roof.

Step three

The image is now taking shape. The rest of the church is completed, again using carefully chosen wool to create the desired effect. For the church, the side walls use a slightly yellow tone to indicate they are side walls and to give the image a ‘3D’ effect.

Step four

After gluing the final strands of wool onto the canvas, the background is added, using watercolour. For the church, Lynn went for a sky blue effect which works well. On the other canvases, Lynn has gone for a variety of backgrounds that compliment the main subject. The canvas is now complete.
